Friends of Healey Dell
The Friends of Healey Dell are over 10 years old and have proven their effectiveness in many ways. For example:
- contribution and input into the management of Healey Dell via representation on the Healey Dell Nature Reserve Joint Management Committee.
- as a pressure group campaigning to protect from development which could impact negatively on the reserve.
- undertaking practical Tasks such as River Cleans, Litter Picks, Cutting/bashing of Himalayan Balsam and Japanese Knotweed and tree coppicing.
- preparing an Annual Event Program in conjunction with the Ranger service
- providing expert lead walks and talks on the local history, flora and fauna of the Dell.
The Friends organise a Social Evening / Quiz Night around Christmas as well as bi-monthly meetings at The Healey Hotel. They also provide barbeques at some of the outdoor events.
In partnership with Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council, they have been successful applicants to various grant bodies, the largest being from the Heritage Lottery Fund for £120,000 to improve access to the Spodden Valley. The Spodden valley Access project was spread over a three year period and concludes with an opening ceremony on 17th November 2006.
The project included surveys of Archaeology, Ecology, Access and the Community. With the information gathered a new Trail has been created based on accessibility. Interpretation panels are sited by each feature. Picnic areas have been created using furniture, made to the Ranger Service own design and specification, using sustainable materials.
